About Nirbhaya Foundation

"NIRBHAYA FOUNDATION" came into existence as a result of the motivation and personal initiative of its founder, Mr. Sher Afzal Khan in 2002, to enhance the socio-economic status of the underprivileged people. Hailing from an agriculture background, he spent his childhood days with his father in the jungle and his village Daatkho, Raisen District, M.P., where he closely witnessed the struggle of the poor and underprivileged people. Witnessing his father’s compassionate social service to the villagers, he felt a deep resonance with the plight of the poor. As he delved into their lives, understanding their hardships, a profound resolution took root within him. Inspired by his father’s example, he pledged to dedicate himself to making a difference in the lives of those in need. The founder set out to do his best to make a positive difference in the lives of the underprivileged, thus a new chapter unfolded as he embarked on a journey to bring positive change to the community.

NIRBHAYA FOUNDATION has been a steadfast non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting marginalized sections of society for over 22 years. The organization initially focused on the development and progress of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, backward, poor, and deprived sections of society. The foundational vision aimed to empower the Dalit and underprivileged communities, both in urban and rural areas, fostering an environment conducive to maximizing their potential for independence and self-reliance. Operating in Bhopal and throughout Madhya Pradesh, the organization sought to assert the rights of the less privileged and enable them to live in dignity.

Over time, the mission evolved to focus on providing succor to women and children in distress, enhancing their self-esteem through a holistic approach encompassing Health, Education, Equality, and Empowerment. The organization became an ‘agent of change,’ dedicated to helping the poorest access and actualize their rights as enshrined in the Constitution of India. The mission expanded further to create a fearlessly educated society, economically, socially, and politically sound, free from bias based on caste, religion, or gender. With a keen awareness of rights, obligations, culture, and the global environment, the organization strives to instill feelings of patriotism and foster a sense of global brotherhood.

In the past 22 years, the NIRBHAYA FOUNDATION has tirelessly pursued a bottom-up approach to inclusive development, impacting the lives of over one lakh people. Operating statewide, the organization has become a beacon for women and children, providing education, empowerment, rights advocacy, and comprehensive training programs. Central to their mission is the Nirbhaya Women Shelter Home, offering refuge, food, clothing, medical assistance, free legal aid, counseling, police support, and vocational training to victims of domestic violence, rape, destitution, abandonment, HIV positivity, and those reintegrating after imprisonment. The organization’s work has garnered appreciation from society and governmental departments, including the Women & Child Department of India, the Home Department, and the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

From its inception in Bhopal, the Nirbhaya Women Shelter Home has expanded its reach all over MP, providing shelter to approximately 5000 women, conducting 20,000 legal counseling and legal aid sessions, 10,000 family counseling sessions, and offering vocational training to 50,000 individuals. The organization has played a pivotal role in uniting girls, women, and rape victims with caring families, fostering happy and fulfilling lives.

Today, the NIRBHAYA FOUNDATION remains steadfast in its commitment, focusing on Women & Child Education, Skills for Youth, and Community Development programs, solidifying its position as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of those it serves.
